Ah the winter blues in Rhode Island getting you down? What you need is good dose of winter sun to perk you up. Lots of good places around to get that like Latin America or Middle East...but have you ever considered a Winter Sun Villa in Cyprus?

The idea that 70% of Americans work out is complete nonsense, a fantasy! Go to any public place in RI and look around - you will see 70% of the crowd are noticeably overweight -especially the kids. In other parts of the country the situation is even worse. I have just been in Chicago and LA -there are a LOT of obese people marching around. Congrats to everyone who has the self-respect to work it off and give their body a break!

I HAVE BEEN SOBER AND AWAY FROM ALCOHOL FOR MANY YEARS NOW. I ENJOY STAYING HOME SAFE AWAY FROM PEOPLE DRIVING DRUNK, LAW ENFORCEMENT AROUND EVERY CORNER, AND NO HANG-OVER AT ALL. THIS IS MY WAY TO HAVE A GREAT TIME WITH MY WIFE AND MY 3-SHELTER RESCUED DOGS. KALI, MINAH, AND LEA. FOR ONCE IN MY LIFE IM THINKING ABOUT OTHERS RATHER THAN MYSELF. THIS IS THE LIFE. HAPPY SAFE NEW YEAR!!!

I find a personal training studio better for me than a regular gym. I get exclusive attention of a trainer who gets to know my strenghts and weaknesses and he can tailer my schedule and routine to best suit me personally. I hightly recommend a personal trainer in a small studio.

I baked three kinds of cookies, four days in a row. I loved every minute of it until the very last day. I HATE the clean up. Confectioners' sugar, flour and cocoa gets every where. :o(

I never heard of Angie's List, but I think less of whatever it is because I know 70 percent of women do not work out. Gallup estimates that only about 35 percent of Americans participate in moderate or vigorous exercise five or more times each week. Look around you. Most Rhode Islanders are way out of shape. Gyms aren't overflowing like supermarkets are!

I do my grocery shopping at Stop & Shop. This time of year, I must go to the market at least 5 times a week. I'll admit, I can't pass by a red Salvation Army kettle without dropping a dollar into it. I know a dollar may not seem like much but if you figure I go to the market 5 times a week, 4 weeks in a month and two months a year that the kettle is out there, it's adds up! I'll admit, it's not a grand amount but I try to help out as many ways as I can. I do realize I'm very lucky to be where I am and to have what I have. You're right. More of us have to stop and take the time to share the "wealth", so to speak. Thank you for pointing that out, Pam. Merry Christmas!

I wonder who started all this frenzy of baking cookies. She couldn't have been an old lady with a bad back. I make cookies for my neighbors every year but I find that my enthusiasm wanes after standing on the tile floor for hours making sure they come out well. My husband has to try at least two or three before he says they are ready to give away. If I give them away my own triglycerides will come down I hope.

Donna, you are indeed crazy. My boys and I did 4 hours of baking on Sunday -- and I was loopy. The fact that the Steelers lost didn't help, either

  • 8:44 PM Sheila Lennon on An early present for Christmas shoppers

You're a wholesale shopper! I zone in on my family, and cruise online. Some ideas, some deals, some browsing, things click. Inconvenient shipping deadlines are near, so I've backed off. Stage II happens in haunts of little shops nearer Christmas. Chocolate and ideas, mostly. (Then there's the bleat at last of "something you could get me for Christmas" from someone on the list. I listen carefully to these. These are the ones they hope you'll give them if you really love them. p.s. I'd love some Pats game tickets.

  • 7:21 PM Sheila Lennon on Going to the Christmas tree farm: a family tradition

Pam, at our house we're all on the real tree page, but I don't want to kill it myself, so we buy one somewhere. It's an adventure these days. Some years we just drive in a likely direction, hoping to bump into one. Last year, on a Monday evening, our three generations found the last place with trees in Rhode Island way up northwest, after empty roadside lots cleaned out on the weekend and not yet restocked. Hey, Jack, how about adding the pickup to the man-cave list?
